Wooden poles

Our main product is impregnated wooden poles for electricity lines and communication lines. Lengths range from seven meters up to 16m, but the main demand is for 10-12m long poles. However, our products are also used
for many other purposes where impregnated and peeled timber can be used- fence posts, tower poles, piles and many other options.

Raw material

Scots Pine "Pinus Sylvestris" is used as a raw material, which is recognized as the most suitable for the pole production of all international standards. Pine is not just a slide tree, but the sturcture of the sapwood cells is the best to penetrate wood preservative that prevents impregnated timber in ground contact for many decades. Forests are the outstanding feature of Latvia, claiming 42% of the territory. Timber and wood products are among the country`s most important exports. Two-thirds of the forests consist of Scots Pine or Norway Spruce. Growing conditions for pine are typical of northern Europe conditions and the vegetation period is only a few months from May to September. Latvian pine is therefore slow growing, the annual rings are small, and the wood is dense and durable.

Peeling

Pole peeling usually occurs in two stages – after the rough peeling the bark is removed, but after the smooth peeling with German machine Bezner FML-10 surface becomes smooth. Since in the peeling process pole is rotating in peeling machine, it is impossible to produce curved poles, and careful material selection is a mandatory for us. After peeling process some hidden defects can show up, therefore final selection is mader after this process to guarnatee high quality poles for next production steps. After the peeling material is sorted according to diameter and length specifications.

Drying

Before impregnation it is required to lead out so called free water from wood cells, therefore the wood is dried to 25-28% moisture level. Usually this is done in a natural way for many months, when poles are stored in cross-stacks in the open air. However, Jauda-Koks LTD has a unique 26m long kiln, which has ability to dry about 500 poles in ten days. This enables to complete quickly any of individual order.

Impregnation

Impregnation occurs in 19.5 m long autoclaves by full cell (Bethell) method. It involves sealing the wood in a pressure chamber and applying a vacuum in order to remove air and moisture from the wood cells. The wood is then pressure-treated with preservatives in order to impregnate the full wood cell. At the end of the process in repeated vacuum conditions excess liquid is removed. Wood preservative protects the wood from decay, insects and other microorganisms.
